Your path: Intel Mac without a Touch Bar
MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro from roughly 2008 to 2015 — plus the 2016/2017 13" MacBook Pro models that kept the function row. By a wide margin, the easiest Linux experience on Apple laptop hardware.

Why this path is the easy one
These machines pre-date Apple's T1 and T2 security chips. From the installer's perspective they're ordinary Intel laptops: standard NVMe or SATA storage, standard Intel or NVIDIA graphics, standard Broadcom or Atheros Wi-Fi. Mainstream Linux distributions install on them with little or no fuss.
Many of these MacBooks are also a few macOS releases past their support cutoff. Apple stopped shipping security updates for them years ago. Putting Linux on the machine is, for a lot of readers, the difference between an unsafe paperweight and a perfectly capable everyday laptop.
What works
- Keyboard, trackpad, screen, brightness, volume, battery indicator — out of the box.
- Wi-Fi — works after the installer prompts you to enable the non-free Broadcom firmware (one click). On a few older models you may need to plug in Ethernet to download that firmware on first boot; a USB-C / USB-A Ethernet adapter for a few euros covers this.
- FaceTime HD camera — works.
- Audio — works.
- Sleep, lid close, suspend/resume — works.
- External displays via Thunderbolt / Mini-DisplayPort / HDMI — works.
Common quirks (small, fixable)
- Wi-Fi firmware prompt. Ubuntu, Zorin, and Mint all ask during install whether to enable non-free drivers. Say yes. If you missed it, install
bcmwl-kernel-sourceafter first boot. - NVIDIA dGPU on some 15" MacBook Pro models (2010–2013). The discrete GPU's "Optimus" switching is unreliable on Linux. The workable solution is to force the integrated Intel GPU only — we'll cover this on the post-install page once we test it ourselves.
- Function keys default to F1–F12, not brightness/volume. Hold the
Fnkey to get the media-control behaviour you had on macOS. Most distros let you swap this default in keyboard settings.
What doesn't work
- iSight indicator LED behaviour can be a little erratic on some models — the camera works, but the green LED may stay on for a few extra seconds.
- That's about it.
The plan
- Try it without installing — on these machines, definitely worth doing. Half an hour of clicking around tells you everything.
- Backup & prep — Time Machine, dual-boot decision, free up space.

Why Zorin OS
It's designed for people coming from macOS — ships with a macOS-style layout (menu bar at the top, dock at the bottom). Underneath it's Ubuntu, which means every Linux application you'll ever read about works on it. Linux Mint is an equally good choice if you prefer a Windows-style desktop; both handle older Mac hardware well.
If your Mac is from 2008–2010, it may have 32-bit EFI even though the CPU is 64-bit. Most modern Linux installers handle this, but a few don't. We'll flag the specifics on the installer-USB page; if you're not sure your machine is supported, booting the live USB first is the cleanest test.
